Filling in the spaces with color on a printed page helps children to recognize hue, perspective, shape and form as well as giving them an opportunity to explore different color combinations. Coloring can have a profoundly therapeutic and calming effect on children as they shift their focus to concentrate on finishing their picture. This peaceful activity can provide an outlet for processing emotions and take the focus off challenging situations.
Coloring is proven therapeutic for some kids, especially if they do it frequently. They vent their feelings, frustrations and other emotions though coloring. An angry child vents out his frustration by scribbling over the picture of the sun or outside the lines.
For this reason it is quite important to choose colors appropriate for children. Using an intense red color in the room, of an anxious child, or dressing them in red clothes or giving them a red rucksack could make him/her even more restless and tense. The same holds true for very active children as well.
